Vehicle Intervention Partnership Wins Safety Award

Mining Magazine honors Hexagon Mining and AngloAmerican Kumba Iron Ore

TUCSON, ARIZONA, January 26, 2018 – Fabien Kritter of Hexagon Mining and Mzwandile Buthelezi of AngloAmerican Kumba Iron Ore were today announced by Mining Magazine as recipients of its 2017 Safety Award.

Fabien Kritter and Mzwandile Buthelezi collaborated on the launch of mining’s first vehicle intervention system.

Mining Magazine readers vote annually for nominees in a variety of award categories, celebrating those they believe have demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing the face of mining. Kritter and Buthelezi were instrumental in the launch of HxGN Mine VIS, the industry’s first vehicle intervention system that detects and prevents collisions by automatically slowing down or even stopping a haul truck if an imminent collision is detected.

Both worked together to develop a solution that would create an additional layer of safety around Hexagon Mining’s collision avoidance system currently protecting vehicle operators at AngloAmerican Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen mine in South Africa. HxGN Mine VIS is now being installed at the mine, well ahead of government regulations compelling mine operators to install vehicle intervention technology on vehicles by June 2019.

“I am thrilled to share this award with Mzwandile, who was so instrumental to the adoption of VIS,” said Kritter. “AngloAmerican Kumba Iron Ore did a fantastic job of being proactive in seeking an additional layer of safety for its employees.”

Hexagon Mining President, Josh Weiss, said the award validates such close cooperation with customers. “Interaction with customers is essential to developing a successful product and our work with AngloAmerican Kumba Iron Ore on VIS proves this,” said Weiss.

Buthelezi  said: “I am excited and honoured to be one of the recipients of this award. This truly goes to show that through partnership great things can be achieved.”

In a video interview, Kritter and Buthelezi discuss HxGN Mine VIS.
